Appeal and Cassation Deadlines in Egyptian Civil Courts
Forty days to appeal and sixty days for cassation: the key deadlines under the Egyptian Civil Procedure Law.
The law
Law No. 13 of 1968 (the Civil and Commercial Procedure Law) sets the deadlines for challenging judgments. These deadlines are mandatory and the court raises them of its own motion.
Key deadlines
• Appeal (الاستئناف): 40 days (Article 227).
• Urgent matters: 15 days.
• Cassation (النقض): 60 days before the Court of Cassation (Article 252).
When does time start?
Generally from the date the judgment is issued. Where the party was absent from all hearings and did not file a defence, time runs from notification of the judgment.
Practical tips
1. Obtain a certified copy of the judgment promptly.
2. In cassation, the petition must be signed by a lawyer admitted before the Court of Cassation and must set out all grounds at filing.
3. Economic Courts have their own appeal structure.
