How to ask an AI legal assistant a question and get a useful answer
Five habits that turn a vague answer into a clear one, and the limits you should keep in mind.
An AI legal assistant can explain the law, point you to the relevant articles and help you prepare documents in seconds. But the quality of the answer depends a lot on the question. These five habits make the difference.
1. Name the country first
The same question has different answers in Riyadh, Dubai and Cairo. Start with the jurisdiction: "Under Saudi law…", "In Dubai…", "In Egypt…". If the matter involves a free zone such as the DIFC or ADGM, say so, because different rules apply there.
2. Give the key facts, briefly
The answer depends on facts such as dates, amounts, the type of contract and who did what. A good question looks like this:
"I worked in Riyadh for 6 years and 4 months. My last wage was SAR 12,000 including allowances. I resigned last month. How much end-of-service award am I owed?"
That one paragraph lets the assistant apply the right rule and calculate the figure.
3. Say what you want
Do you want an explanation, a calculation, a list of your options, or a draft letter or complaint? Asking for the output you need saves a round of follow-up questions.
4. Attach the document when it matters
If your question is about a contract, a court notice or a letter from the other side, attach it. The assistant can then point to the exact clause instead of guessing. In LexArab you can also choose "Test opponent's document" to look for weak points in the other side's paper.
5. Ask for the legal basis, then ask follow-ups
Ask which law and article the answer relies on. When an answer cites a source, check it. Then ask follow-up questions in the same conversation: "What if the employer refuses to pay?", "How long do I have to file?"
What AI does well, and where it stops
AI is good at explaining rules, organising facts, calculating entitlements and producing first drafts. It does not replace a lawyer when:
• there is a court deadline, or you have received a claim or a summons;
• large sums, your residence, your family or your liberty are at stake;
• the facts are disputed and evidence will decide the case.
In those situations, use the AI answer to prepare, then have a lawyer review your case.
Your privacy
Share only what is needed to answer the question. On LexArab, your questions and documents stay private and are not shared.
