End-of-Service Gratuity in Qatar: The Three-Week Minimum

Article 54 of the Qatar Labour Law sets a minimum gratuity of three weeks' basic wage per year of service.

The rule

Under Article 54 of Law No. 14 of 2004 (the Labour Law), a worker who has completed more than one year of service is entitled to an end-of-service gratuity of not less than three weeks' basic wage for each year of service, with part-years counted proportionately.

Key points

• The calculation uses the last basic wage, not allowances.
• The contract may grant more than the legal minimum, but not less.
• The employer may deduct sums the worker owes it.
• Special rules can apply on dismissal for misconduct, so check the reason for termination.

Example

A worker with a basic wage of QAR 7,000 and 4 years' service: daily wage ≈ 7,000 ÷ 30 = 233.33; 21 days × 4 years = 84 days ≈ QAR 19,600 (minimum).

Claims

Labour disputes go first to the Labour Disputes Settlement Committees at the Ministry of Labour.
